Crop progress report 09/10: Continued harvest in Washington
From the National Agricultural Statistics Service
There were 6.9 days suitable for fieldwork in Washington, up from 5.8 days reported the previous week.
Western Washington conditions were dry, and farmers made good time on harvest.
Central Washington had consistent weather across the week, with daytime highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. In Yakima County, dry conditions persisted. Apple harvest continued with Gala, Honeycrisp, and some Red Delicious varieties. A few more Bartlett pears came in as growers started putting harvest bins in the winter pear orchards. Hop harvest continued to pick up. Sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, and summer and winter squashes were also harvested.
Northeast Washington neared the end of harvest for the area. Some canola was still harvested, and field preparation started for fall planting.
Southeast Washington experienced spotty thunderstorms with rain in some locations but felt continued drought conditions otherwise.
