Crop progress report 0610: Washington stays the course with rain west of the Cascades, poor condition in northeast

From NASS There were 6.2 days suitable for field work last week. Pasture and range conditions were reported at 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 64 percent good and 9 percent excellent. A low temperature of 32 degrees F was reported in the northeast region, while a high temperature of 91 degrees F was reported in the southeast region. Statewide temperature differential ranged from 3 degrees below normal to 6 degrees above normal. Northwestern Washington received precipitation this last week. Clallam, Jefferson, King and Snohomish counties were too wet to plow-in cover crops. Fresh market harvest began for strawberries in Whatcom County. Whatcom and Skagit counties were also wet last week, which relieved growers from irrigating. Good conditions continued in San Juan County, where livestock were on pasture, hay was cut, berries were in bloom, and high tunnel crops thrived. Cucurbits, tomatoes, and peppers in Snohomish County were planted. Some farms added row cover to compensate for the colder temperatures. The Gorge had dry, warm conditions. Klickitat County wrapped up the first cutting of alfalfa. Producers noticed heavy damage due to bugs and dry conditions in the hay harvest. Northeastern Washington reported poor winter canola conditions. Showers in Pend Oreille and Spokane counties prevented spring plantings in some areas.
