Crop progress report 0512: Washington livestock on pastures with warm weather

From NASS There were 7.0 days suitable for fieldwork in Washington last week, up from 6.9 the previous week. Livestock were on pastures in Western Washington. Most ranchers finished calving and first cut of haylage was harvested. Vegetable growers along the Puget Sound transplanted seedlings. There were some operations that baled dry hay—the earliest for dry hay in recent memory. San Juan County was dry. Apples finished blooming, livestock was on pasture, and vegetable plantings wrapped up. Skagit County was dry. Snohomish County had plenty of tillage and planting activity. First silage corn was planted. Pastures were renovated. Warm temperatures in Douglas and Chelan counties helped fall crops and pastures. Livestock was released onto pasture. Kittitas and Yakima counties received zero precipitation. Spring wheat and barley started to emerge in Klickitat County. Producers started spraying alfalfa. Vegetable crews in Yakima County laid down black plastic and irrigation. Pepper and cucumbers were transplanted. Corn emerged and received irrigation. Asparagus harvest continued. Lower Yakima Valley cherries had a good set progressing. Wine grapes had approximately one foot of shoot growth. Hops worked their way up trellises. Franklin County had no precipitation. The first cutting of alfalfa and triticale greenchop were being harvested all week. Beans, sweet corn and field corn were planted. Adams and Lincoln counties had warm and dry conditions which affected soil moisture.
