Crop progress 0422: Spring brought a broad spectrum of conditions to Washington

From NASS There were 5.4 days suitable for field work last week. Pasture and range conditions were reported at 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 46 percent good and 9 percent excellent. A low temperature of 25 degrees F was reported in the northeast region, while a high temperature of 73 degree F was reported in the southeast region. Statewide temperature differentials ranged from 4 degrees below normal to 4 degrees above normal. Areas of the state were warm and dry, while others continued to be cool and damp. The Olympic Peninsula and Washington Coast had wet fields and were still using supplemental feed on livestock. San Juan County reported continued rain, with pears and plums blooming. More inland parts of western Washington were drying out and allowed livestock to go out to pasture. Raspberry growers in Whatcom County were hilling and setting posts for the coming season. Skagit County began planting. Pears and apples began blooming in Snohomish County, but standing water in fields persisted and harvest of green chop was delayed. Southwest Washington reported berries were behind, especially the strawberries. The northeastern corner of the state also reported continued wetness; snow damaged wheat was reported. Asparagus was harvested in Franklin County, tillage continued for corn fields, and pea planting ended. Spring planting was underway in Asotin County and the winter wheat crop was sprayed. Warm winds rippled through southwest Washington.
