Our History Over 7 Decades of Washington Wheat
The Washington Association of Wheat Growers (WAWG) was founded in 1954 by Washington wheat producers who recognized that individual farmers needed a unified voice to effectively advocate for their interests. The organization established an office in Ritzville, Wash., and elected its inaugural leadership team: John Stephenson of Benge as president, Donald Moos of Edwall as vice president, Edgar L. Smith of St. John as second vice president, and Ken Parks of Fairfield as secretary.
Within months of its formation, WAWG organized county chapters throughout Eastern Washington and grew its membership to approximately 2,000 growers.
In 1955, the WAWG Executive Committee voted to support the creation of a wheat commission funded through assessments on all wheat produced east of the Cascade Mountains. That effort led to the establishment of the Washington Wheat Commission in 1958. The commission later became the Washington Grain Commission following its merger with the Washington Barley Commission.
